Using Push2Run with Alexa

Post by RobLatour »

Just a quick post to let you know Push2Run can also be used with Amazon's Alexa devices.

However, as IFTTT doesn’t offer an Alexa service providing for commands with variable endings an IFTTT applet is needed for each command you want to give to Alexa (with Google you only need to set-up one generic IFTTT applet that supports variable endings and thus all your commands).

Also, what you say to Alexa to make it work isn’t as intuitive as with a Google Home device.

For example, with a Google Home device, you could say:

Ok Google, tell my computer to open the calculator

but with Alexa you would say:

Alexa, trigger open the calculator

If you're ok with these limits, here’s how to make it work ...

First, the general set up is for the most part as described at https://push2run.com/setup.html with only the following differences:

When you get to the IFTTT 'If this then that' window ...

for the IFTTT ‘this’ chose the Amazon Alexa service, and for the trigger chose ‘Say a simple phrase’

for the IFTTT ‘that’ chose Pushbullet, and use
a title of
Push2Run <your PC name>
a message of
open the calculator

everything else is the same.

Again if you want to run multiple commands using Alexa, you need to create multiple IFTTT applets. In this way, for example, you could create another applet that would respond to ‘Alexa, trigger shut down my computer’.

Hopefully, at some point, Amazon and IFTTT will team up to allow commands with variable endings, and this will all be made much more simple.

Enjoy!
